  13. I have a '76 Dodge Dart with unsafe front end.
  14. Its left wheel lower control arm shaft has broken free from the
  15. crossmember and kind of moves around a little occasionally in the crossmember
  16. causing the steering to jerk and the toe-in to become toe-out .
  17. I assume that eventually, the failure mode will be that the left wheel will
  18. fall off as the shaft rips out of the crossmember entirely if the
  19. torsion bar will let it.

  21. Does anyone think this should be repairable for a hundred or two
  22. if I find a good welder 
  23. to weld the crossmember without removing the crossmember from the car ?
  24. Or should I just junk it ?

  26. I have had one shop give me the opinion that it is not weldable and that
  27. replacing the crossmember would cost more than the car is worth
  28. (they quoted something like 15 hours labor).
  29. They claim that there is a sleeve through the crossmember that
  30. the shaft goes through and that the sleeve has broken free from the
  31. crossmember at least on the front side of the crossmember.  This may be
  32. complicated since they say it was already welded once (not revealed to me
  33. when I purchased the car two years ago) so 'there is not enough material
  34. left to weld again'.
  35. I can  not verify there is such a sleeve in my Chilton's,
  36. but I can see damage where
  37. the shaft is bolted on the front side of the crossmember.
