- I have a '76 Dodge Dart with unsafe front end.
- Its left wheel lower control arm shaft has broken free from the
- crossmember and kind of moves around a little occasionally in the crossmember
- causing the steering to jerk and the toe-in to become toe-out .
- I assume that eventually, the failure mode will be that the left wheel will
- fall off as the shaft rips out of the crossmember entirely if the
- torsion bar will let it.
-
- Does anyone think this should be repairable for a hundred or two
- if I find a good welder
- to weld the crossmember without removing the crossmember from the car ?
- Or should I just junk it ?
-
- I have had one shop give me the opinion that it is not weldable and that
- replacing the crossmember would cost more than the car is worth
- (they quoted something like 15 hours labor).
- They claim that there is a sleeve through the crossmember that
- the shaft goes through and that the sleeve has broken free from the
- crossmember at least on the front side of the crossmember. This may be
- complicated since they say it was already welded once (not revealed to me
- when I purchased the car two years ago) so 'there is not enough material
- left to weld again'.
- I can not verify there is such a sleeve in my Chilton's,
- but I can see damage where
- the shaft is bolted on the front side of the crossmember.
-
- Any information would be appreciated.
