I have just rebuilt a subwoofer by making a new cabinet and by tossing the
200Hz crossover for a 120Hz crossover. The high-pass section of my crossover
was just a couple of capacitors. According to the guy who has been helping
me with this sub, you can't properly cross over the sub to the satellites
using this method becuase you will alter the values of the capacitors in the
satellites. Skimming ahead in my Engg Phys text book seems to confirm this
were hooking the caps in series or parallel alters the overall capacitance
which would suggest that the tweeters in my old Infinity SM100's were not
crossing over at the right frequency.
The Infinitys are gone and in their place are a pair of Snell KII's that allow
bi-wiring so I think I can crossover from the sub to the satellites without
disturbing the crossover frequency of the tweeter.
The question: Is this something I really need to worry about as I really didn'thear a difference with my Infinitys except before I got rid of them, I wasn't
using the high-pass. If so, how can I cheaply crossover to the satellites
(less than $80)? Does anybody have any experience with this problem?
I am curious how all those subs that you see correctly high-pass to the
satellites without screwing up the satellites' crossover. In other words,
how do you isolate it so it won't screw things up?
