- The B in BNR is for BELL - I am connected with them.
-
- Remember all of those European countries where the government runs the
- phone systems? UK, Italy, Germany? Horrid service, long waits for
- phones, lease your modem only from the PTT (Post, Telegraph, Telephone)?
-
- I think that the government-regulated private monopoly is a good way of
- delivering services. The government agency (CRTC) feels free to
- criticize Bell Canada and set standards of service that are very high.
- And Bell has to deliver, or the CRTC will give it a hard time. A
- government agency (of any level) won't respond the same way to criticism
- from another government agency. In fact, government agencies generally
- regard it as unfair to publically criticize other agencies.
-
- Many of Canada's phone companies are or have been government owned by
- the provinces, BTW. Alberta Government Telephones is now privatized as
- Novatel, I think. NBTel is still government, maybe.
-
- The CRTC wasn't able to regulate the provincial phone companies as
- effectively, due to jurisdictional issues.
