- An architect on the big-dig told me the other day that there is
- no room for a train track at this point because of federal regulations
- that required a certain expansion in number of lanes in order to
- get federal money, and also the requirement of a breakdown lane.
-
- In other words, the cost of adding another couple lanes for rail traffic
- goes up exponentially, because that requires cutting under buildings
- is some places.
-
- So you have to get Congress to pass a law restricting the number
- of automobile traffic lanes. In which case, why bother with
- the big dig anyway?
-
- In fact, the big dig will take what is effectively a 2-story building
- and make it into a one story building. 2-levels of lanes, into one
- level, assuming that the new street-level is going to be for trees and
- parks and stuff.
