- I heard two things from Susan, too, but they're not contradictory.
- I know _exactly_ where she's coming from--I've been there. First,
- she'd gladly have an episiotomy to avoid an extra 15 minutes
- of pushing (me too). Second, she actually _did_ have to have one
- because of a vacuum extraction (me too).
-
- I would like to reiterate Susan's original point--an episiotomy isn't
- _necessarily_ (in fact isn't usually) such a big deal. Reading these
- postings on episiotomies, a new expectant mother might think that you
- can't get up and move afterwards, or that you're going to be in dire pain
- afterwards. Well, that just isn't _necessarily_ (key word here, Peggy)
- true. I've had two episiotomies--one for the vacuum thing and one
- because my daughter's big head got stuck coming out. After both I
- was up walking around within a half hour of the birth. I could sit
- fairly comfortably and I didn't need pain medication. This was true
- for the other mothers I know who had episiotomies as well. In fact,
- among my large circle of child-bearing friends, I don't know anyone
- whose episiotomy presented any type of difficulty after the birth.
-
- As Susan said, it does help a lot to use ice packs afterwards, but I
- would want to do that after a non-episiotomy birth too.
-
- So, it is wise to be prepared ahead of time and to try to avoid
- unnecessary stitches, but if it does come to that chances are good
- that it will be no big deal.
