  12. Here are some hallmarks of authoritarian parents I have known, which
  13. may help differentiate them from other kinds:
  14.  
  15. 1. Authoritarian parents take offense if their kids do something
  16.    successfully, but in a way that differed from their instructions.
  17.    That is, authoritarian parents discourage and even punish independent
  18.    thinking, even when it's successful.
  19.  
  20. 2. Authoritarian parents will punish children for things that might
  21.    not even provoke a comment from other people.
  22.  
  23. 3. Authoritarian parents talk about being "forced" to punish "for the
  24.    principle of the thing," but can't articulate what principle they're
  25.    defending.
  26.  
  27. 4. Authoritarian parents get more confused and desperate as their children
  28.    get older and more independent, as their ability to control (or even
  29.    influence) their children declines.

  31. (I suppose you can see that I have a low opinion of authoritarian parenting!)
