  30.            Two More Shootings Today at Queensbridge Houses

  33. QUEENSBRIDGE HOUSES, November 22, 1992, Normandeau Newswire- There
  34. were two more shootings today at the notorious Queensbridge Houses in
  35. the shadows of the Queensboro Bridge, in Long Island City, Queens.

  37. Around 1:08 AM today there was a lot of machine gun fire resulting in
  38. a slew of calls to 9-1-1 as well as to the New York City Housing
  39. Authority Police Base.

  41. At 1:14 AM police were chasing a possible perp into 41-08 12 street
  42. and onto the roof. The perp was then able to go over the roof to
  43. another building and escape.

  45. Why was the perp able to get into the building so easily? The lobby
  46. door was probably unlocked.

  48. It is New York City Housing Authority policy to leave some lobby
  49. doors unlocked as a form of punishment for tenants. This has been
  50. documented by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
  51. Altho the New York City Housing Authority General Counsel has advised
  52. tenants to take up such issues with NYC HA Director of Management
  53. Donald Matthews. Matthews simply won't return calls.

  55. At 1:23 AM police found two shooting victims at 41-05 Vernon
  56. Boulevard Apartment 4B. One victim was shot in the back, the other
  57. victim in the leg.

  59. Tenants had recently complained about a an outdoor light outage in
  60. front of that building to Donald Matthews. Matthews refused to return
  61. calls. It was only after a former crime victim from 41-04 Vernon
  62. faxed Matthews "Please either reply to my communiques or have someone
  63. show cause why you should not become a party to litigation were
  64. injuries to be sustained as a result of your not responding to this
  65. problem" did anyone respond, and it was not Matthews who responded.

  67. The two shooting victims of Sunday November 22, 1992 now brings it to
  68. a total of AT LEAST FIVE PEOPLE SHOT so far at Queensbridge Houses in
  69. November 1992.

  71. In August there was a homicide in a 10 Street building with an
  72. unlocked lobby door for which Donald Matthews was a contributory
  73. factor if he ignored complaints from that building also.

  75. The Queensbridge Tenant Association membership unanimously voted for
  76. the Nation of Islam to be chosen to provide security at Queensbridge
  77. Houses. This position is supported by the Queensbridge Tenant
  78. Council. Due to ADL protests, the Nation of Islam has not been able
  79. to come in and the carnage continues.
