  22. Xanana Gusmao, the leader of east Timor's  independence movement, 
  23. Fretilin (sic), was arrested by Indonesian military forces at 6 a..m. 
  24. today (20 Nov. 1992) in Dili. It is not yet known where he is detained 
  25. but, shortly after his arrest, government sources said that he was 
  26. "undergoing intensive questioning" or military interrogation. Shortly 
  27. after the arrest was announced Portugal, a United Nations (UN)  
  28. member state, urged the UN Secretary-General to seek guarantees 
  29. for the safety of Xanana Gusmao.

  31. In view of a consistent pattern of torture and ill-treatment of East 
  32. Timorese political prisoners while under interrogation, Amnesty 
  33. International is deeply concerned for the safety of Xanana Gusmao. 
  34. The organization is particularly concerned that, because of Xanana's 
  35. position as commander of the armed resistance, Indonesian military 
  36. authorities may employ torture to extract political and military 
  37. intelligence.

  39. Amnesty International is seeking immediate guarantees from the 
  40. Indonesian authorities that Xanana Gusmao will be treated humanely 
  41. while in detention; that representatives of the International 
  42. Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) will be granted immediate and 
  43. unconditional access to his place of detention; and that he will be 
  44. accompanied by a lawyer of his own choice while being interrogated, 
  45. as required by Indonesian law.
