  19. following Press Release today, 20 November 1992:

  21. TAPOL CALLS FOR RELEASE OF EAST TIMOR RESISTANCE LEADER

  23. The Indonesian army announced today that Xanana Gusm~o, the
  24. leader of the East Timor resistance movement, was arrested
  25. in Dili early this morning and is now undergoing intense
  26. questioning. There has been no independent confirmation of
  27. Xanana's arrest.
  28.  
  29. The international community has long recognised Xanana
  30. Gusmao as the undisputed leader of East Timor's courageous
  31. resistance to its invasion and annexation by Indonesia in
  32. 1975. He has led the resistance movement with great courage,
  33. foresight and determination since 1980, having restored the
  34. movement's fortunes after the severe defeat it suffered in
  35. the late 1970s. Xanana has long been the symbol of
  36. resistance for both the older and younger generations of
  37. East Timorese.

  39. The Indonesian army is known to treat their political
  40. prisoners with extreme brutality. If Xanana Gusmao is now in
  41. their hands, it is essential for him to be given full
  42. protection by the international community. The International
  43. Red Cross should be given immediate access.
  44.  
  45. TAPOL most vigorously protests against the arrest of the
  46. resistance leader and calls for his immediate and
  47. unconditional release.

  49. As leader of the national resistance, Xanana Gusmao has a
  50. crucial role to play in the talks about the future of East
  51. Timor which are now underway under UN auspices. The UN
  52. Secretary-General Dr Boutros-Ghali is understood to be
  53. planning to hold consultations with representatives of the
  54. East Timorese people as part of this process. Xanana Gusmao
  55. must not be prevented from taking part in these
  56. consultations.

  58. TAPOL has called on the UN Secretary-General and the British
  59. government to press for Xanana's immediate release, to do
  60. everything possible to ensure his safety, and ensure that he
  61. will be able to participate in consultations about the
  62. future of East Timor.
