  21. The San Francisco/Bay Area U.S.-Cuba Friendshipment is activating
  22. its emergency response network because of the latest news that a
  23. customs official in Laredo, TX, was quoted as saying that the
  24. caravan would be prevented from carrying embargoed materials into
  25. Mexico, even if it means arrest.

  27. According to the November 15 edition of the Minneapolis Star-
  28. Tribune, Audrey Plotkin, district director of U.S. Customs, met
  29. last week with Laredo plice, Texas Deptartment of Public Safety,
  30. and U.S. Border Patrol representatives.  She says that they don't
  31. want any problems, they want to "ensure the flow of international
  32. trade and traffic," but that items included in the U.S. embargo
  33. against Cuba would be kept from crossing the bridge into Mexico. 
  34. Customs licensing personnel from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets
  35. Control will reportedly be in Laredo to try to issue export
  36. licenses to the caravan.  "If they don't want to get a license and
  37. they try and ship the goods, they will be stopped," said Judy
  38. Turner of the Customs Service in Houston.  "If that means we have
  39. to detain them or arrest them, then that's what we'll do."

  41. Timely response is crucial to the success of the caravan.  We are
  42. calling, writing, and sending mailgrams to the division of the
  43. Treasury Department that administers the embargo (this has proved
  44. very effective in the past), demonstrating along with many other
  45. U.S. cities this Friday, November 20 at 5:00pm, at 425 Market St
  46. near Embardadero BART, and asking people to activate their own
  47. phone lists with this informatioin.
