- JOURNALIST KILLED IN MEXICO
-
- Ignacio Mendoza, 52 years old, former director of the newspaper La
- voz del Caribe, was shot to death on Friday night, November 13 in
- Mexico City. One day before his death Mendoza had appeared before
- the governmental National Commission on Human Rights (CNDH) to say
- that he felt desperate in the face of agressive actions by the
- governor of the state of Quintana Roo, Mendoza's home state.
- Mendoza accused the governor, Miguel Borge, of having ordered
- Mendoza's three children to be shot.
-
- The journalist was killed by gunshots through the door of his home
- in the Iztapalapa neighborhood of Mexico City, where he lived in
- self-exile from his home state for fear of the governor's threats.
- On the night of the killing Mendoza returned to his home after a
- demonstration by journalists commemorating the 50th anniversary of
- the Foreign Correspondents Association of Mexico, which was
- attended by Mexican president Carlos Salinas. (AFP 11/16)
