- Well, as you have already heard, I am taking buster private.
- This thread is currently discussing the very reasons for this
- decision.
-
- 1. I have a small system (486/25 with 900MB). When I first
- started taking a news feed from nuchat not that many years
- ago, the flow was more like a trickle and a small system
- could handle a full feed. In fact, many people were just
- starting to reach their limits with the old unix-pc
- (remember those).
-
- 2. I have grown tired of people treating this free service
- which I have been providing as if I owed it to them. I did
- it for free and I made no guarantees (you get what you pay
- for). Lately I have gotten calls when the news feed was
- down for more than 3 or 4 hours. I think that anyone who
- cannot tolerate short news outages should immediately shift
- over to one of the pay services such as nuchat or uunet.
- Yes, they cost more, but you do have the right to complain
- when the service is substandard.
-
- 3. I do not want to start a religious war here, but I am changing
- my system from unix to windows. We only use windows at work
- and I am going to move toward being more compatible with work.
- Besides, it looks to me like windows-nt is just another name for
- single user unix, but with a better DOS interface than vpix.
-
- 4. I am tired of being anything other than a leaf node. Time
- moves on and things change. I feel as Gil and Peter and
- many others here do that it is time for a change. It is
- time for the old guard to retire and time for some new blood
- (ideas) to take over.
-
- I believe that one positive step that the houston usenet
- community could take is toward limited feeds, where each site
- takes only those groups important to them and leaves the rest.
- Also, in the free sector, everyone should be willing to pass on
- for free what they get for free. That is of course, after they
- have enough experience to do so. In this manner, the flow at
- most sites will again be reduced to a trickle and those groups
- which do not flow in Houston will be the ones that no one reads
- anyway.
-
- This type of hierarchy does create a problem in the handling of
- new newsgroups distribution. If everyone is working from a fixed
- list of newsgroups, each site will have to examine the newgroup
- control messages and locate a feed site when they want to add a
- new group to their sys entry.
-
- Remember, from the ashes comes the Phoenix. So it is time to
- fire the barn!
