- Folks:
-
- as much as it is against my UNIX religion, I am seriously contemplating
- implementing a 'hit man' type procedure that checks for idle jobs on our
- systems and removes them. I don't have a problem with idle jobs per se
- (and we're getting them in the +5days time-frames!). However, when systems
- develop problem and users are idle in Ingres or other locking processes,
- it makes bringing down all associated processes and the system that much
- more difficult and less clean.
-
- Again, in general, I am against such policy (as it typicaly serves no need
- save to piss of a few users). And some idle time is valid. But i've got
- to consider my alternatives.
-
- Are there existing shell-based routines out there that can determine the
- idle processes and nuke them. One that works with Ingres/Oracle processes
- is preferable. Barring that, even one with simple who, grep, awk, kill,
- etc stuff would be good for starters (and saving me time).
-
- Thanks for all ideas!
