- We are electronic publishers, and a new venture we're planning for the near
- future involves us distributing text to readers on a wide variety of machines.
-
- We will be needing "reading" programs for the users to display this text.
- We will want these reading programs to handle more than just ASCII -- a
- limited rich text format is desired, with support for basic formatting,
- italics, bold, underlining, headers and foreign characters. Royalties will
- be paid to software authors.
-
- I haven't decided if we'll define our own format or use MIME or Microsoft
- RTF or some other semi-standard.
-
- In addition to reading programs for the various platforms, we'll also
- want translation programs to translate into the existing rich text and
- multimedia formats for use by existing word processors and display
- software.
-
- All the above is likewise true for printing -- we'll want programs to
- let people print their text on laser printers, good dot matrix etc., or
- to translate it into troff, TeX or other formatting languages to broaden
- the support.
-
- The reading programs will do more than display. It would be nice if they
- featured "bookmark" faciliites and other nice reading features.
-
- We're willing to pay royalties for these programs, or at least the ones
- distributed to paying users. We would have to work out other schemes for
- translation programs run only on our machines, though those things are simpler
- and we can probably write them ourselves, unless they already exist.
- Pointers to existing software are welcome.
-
- We want reading programs for at least DOS, the Mac, Windows and Unix/X,
- though we'll probably generate our own for DOS and Unix/Curses.
-
- We'll want printing programs to handle HP Laser printers, Postscript
- and so on.
-
- Contact me via E-mail for more details, and to learn what this exciting
- project is about.
