- Whether Motorola was a superior company or not, it is being left in the
- dust today. More and more companies are swithching from 68xxx to intel
- i960's for laser printing; Next uses an Intel i860 for its high-speed
- graphics boards. 68040's have OK floating point at low (33 MHz) clocks,
- but 68040's can't go much faster than 33 MHz without setting your house
- on fire. Unix benchmarks put a 66 MHx 486DX2 2.5 times faster than a 33
- MHz 68040 on dhrystone, and at least 20% faster on Linpack.
-
- I think Moto got taken in by the "quality" scam, which caused them to
- get the 68040 out > 1.5 years after Intel introduced the 486. It's a
- shame; competition keeps them all working the hardest. If RISC were not
- breathing down Intel's neck, they would feel less inclined to improve
- the P5 floating point.
