  28. No joy.  Same symptoms.  But thanks for the suggestion!

  30. The annoying aspect of this problem is that the drive writes HD's just fine
  31. once they're formatted.  What's the difference between ordinary I/O and
  32. formatting that would cause only FORMAT to fail?  (In fact, FORMAT will fail
  33. if I use it on a formatted diskette that I could otherwise write on!)
