- I have an old (in computer years) Epson Equity II+ at home to which I have
- recently added an SVGA card. The card works fine, but unfortunately the
- SETUP utility that comes on disk with the machine only knows about CGA and
- monochrome. As a result, I get an annoying message from the POST (162 -System
- Options Not Set) and I have to hit F1 to boot up. I'm looking for some way
- to overcome this minor annoyance.
-
- One thing I have tried is to set the appropriate CMOS bits myself using
- DEBUG. As I understand it, bits 4-5 of the configuration byte need to be 00 for
- a video card with onboard bios (like a VGA). Its easy to do this: you
- send the configuration byte offset (14h) to port 70h and the configuration
- byte value to port 71h. I've confirmed the change by reading the value back in,
- so I know it works. However, this has no effect on my problem. I know that
- there is also a checksum byte in the CMOS, so I suspect that my problem is that
- it needs to be recalculated. Does anyone know how this value is figured ?
-
- In a more general vein, does anybody know anything about the BIOS on these EPSON
- machines? There may well be a ROM setup program that can do what I want, but if
- so, I have been unable to figure out how to invoke it. The Crtl-Alt-Esc
- combination has that works with other BIOSs has no effect.
-
- While I'm at it, a question on another subject. The ST-250R that came with the
- machine is a miserable performer, despite having a reasonable seek time. I
- believe this has to do with the 8-bit Seagate controller: it seems to give
- its maximum performance with an interleave of 4 or more. While this would be
- reasonable for an XT, it seems pretty poor on an AT type machine. Is there
- anything one can do to improve things short of getting another controller?
- I don't really want to spend any more money on this machine.
-
- Thanks,
-
