- Brief tutorial on degaussing for the uninitiated.....
-
- I won't say that ALL monitors do this but most good ones probably do:
-
- When you turn the unit on a coil around the outside of the front of the
- picture tube is turned on. It basically creates a large magnetic field
- around the faceplate of the tube. Over the period of a minute or two
- this field gradually collapses and has the effect of de-magnetizing or
- "degaussing" the picture tube.
-
- The purpose of this feature is to deal with minor variations in magnetic
- fields that would disturb the purity of the video. The problem is that
- this field is rather weak and it would take lots of cycles for it to
- erase the effects of a magnet placed directly on the screen.
-
- A degaussing coil used by a technician is portable and can be moved
- around the face of the tube to put a stronger field where it'll do the
- most good, the magnetized area of the screen.
-
- The original poster (Bryan Utas) asked how do treat the problem. If you
- know a friendly Tech somewhere who will do you a favor it'll take all of
- 2-3 minutes. If you don't know anyone like this then a service shop
- might take pity and do it for a couple of bucks. This kind of job gives
- the shop a good name and it helps if you praise them mightily and let
- them know you'll spread their name far and wide as THE place to go for
- service :)
-
- I built my own degaussing coil many years ago out of a coil of
- transformer wire (enameled) a push-button switch (N/O), a thermister and
- a few other assorted parts. It's come in handy on occasion.
