  12. I would like to get a cd-rom drive for a Gateway 486/33 ISA (or possibly for 
  13. an older 386/33, Intel motherboard). I currently have no interest in 
  14. "multimedia" per se; I want access to encyclopedias and atlases, etc.

  16. Gateway is selling a Sony cd-rom drive for about $220. I don't have the 
  17. details, but I believe it is a (ca.) 340 ms drive. Any opinions on this 
  18. system, vs. buying an all-in-one drive+encyclopedia, would be appreciated.

  20. I'm a newcomer to cd-rom, so I'd appreciate any experiences, buying hints, 
  21. etc. -- particularly the "gotchas" you know now, and wish you had known when 
  22. you bought your drive. I know nothing about cd-rom "compatibility" issues, nor 
  23. which drives can read which media. Any experiences concerning IRQ conflicts 
  24. with other drives would also be helpful.
