  13. There are plenty of ways to reformat an IDE drive safely.  In the case of  
  14. the Maxtor drive which touched off this thread, my suggestion would be to  
  15. call Maxtor.  They will cheerfully supply you with their bbs number, where  
  16. you can download a program to test and format the exact Maxtor model you  
  17. have.

  19. I did this with a messed up Maxtor LXT200A I had and it worked out to be a  
  20. fast and safe solution.  the drive is happily supporting a Netware server  
  21. now.

  23. Not that many IDE drives CAN be safely formatted with any format utility.   
  24. I had problems with a Conner drive, and they told me to go ahead and low  
  25. level it any way I wanted to.  They stated that Connor IDE drives DON'T  
  26. have the problem of not being able to be formatted in the field.
