- If you find any way to do this, *please* let me know! When we tried
- to find a way to do this about a year ago, though, the word from HP
- tech support was that it could not be done. I was even talking to
- someone on the design team in Bristol, who said it was basically not
- possible, but gave me a set of things to try which he thought had
- *maybe* a 1% chance of working for us, but it didn't work. (Basically
- power off the drive while a long write is in process. Then try to
- advance over this spot by doing something like "mt fsf 4", and hope it
- can advance over the "glitch". Risky, but it might have the potential
- of allowing the tape drive to advance into the lost data. It didn't
- work, though.)
-
- I'm really surprised that there are no recovery utilities available,
- however. This *is* going to happen on occassion, and you can have
- gigabytes of data actually on the tape, and inaccessible because the
- software/firmware will not let you go past the EOT record, an operation
- that is *easy* to do with 9-tracks. *Sigh* Perhaps HP will provide
- a future update which allows this.
