- Lots of people seem to be complaining about how crap ST Format is, so I
- thought I'd post everything interesting in the current issue to save people
- having to buy it (I bought it for the free copy of Protext V4.3, without
- dictionary or manual (Available for 20 pounds), but otherwise complete).
-
- Firstly they said that they have been told that a ship load of Falcons was
- just about to be sent to England as they went to press.
- 2. They have done some compatability tests with the Falcon030 and apparently
- no game that attempts to access the STs sound chip directly will work (I
- assume a crash due to invalid memory access). They suggested that this might
- be solved in the future. A few serious software packages also failed
- (including First Word Plus and That's Write) although scanner hardware and
- software worked perfectly. They said they were generally disappointed with
- compatability.
- 3. They showed the insides of a Falcon030 - from what I can remember every
- chip was surface mounted. TOS is stored on a single chip (Can't remember
- whether surface mounted). The general board design seemed a bit strange with
- several very long tracks on the upper side.
- 4. TOS4 is said to look like earlier versions (They did not have Multi-TOS)
- except that it has been 3Derised. They couldn't find any bugs in TOS.
- 5. They claim that a redesigned Falcon030 case will be out after christmas and
- an 040 machine later in the year.
- 6. They reported several interesting pieces of software being developed for
- the Falcon, mostly serious stuff by well known companies.
- 7. The DSP has 96K words (500K bytes odd?) of zero-wait state RAM - that's
- 32MHz speed (on a 48 bit data bus?)! (I already knew this really, but it
- never sunk in how fast and big the private RAM was before).
- 8. All that Falcon stuff has made me forget what else was in there.
- 9. Oh yeah, the rest of the news section was taken up by moaning about lack of
- ST games support (They may have a point - they could only find 4 or 5
- games to review in that issue, I remember when they had 15 or so, not that
- I liked having to skip through that many pages of game reviews).
- 10.I just couldn't resist making it up to 10
