- By coincidence, I recently asked about it on comp.os.os9 because Cumana
- seems to be selling off their OS-9/ST packages for dirt cheap (~$200).
-
- They include OS-9/68000 ver2.3 (one step back from the latest), assembler,
- C compiler, a bunch of ported Unix tools, and I think a version of Sculptor
- (a powerful 4GL database management system, which used to sell for $1000).
-
- It does not include windowing, but I'm told that MGR is available. I think
- G-Windows may also be had (G-W is a pretty cool setup). I don't know costs.
- Oh. It does include MIDI port drivers, which the US-sold version from
- Microware did not (I've been running their version for several years now).
-
- To answer your other questions, you might ask in comp.os.os9 for a copy of
- the FAQ, but in brief: yes, it's multitasking and multiuser (altho not
- super strong on security). Any terminal-oriented OS-9/68K applications
- should work on it (most have been ported from Unix). The Cumana version
- doesn't include networking. OS-9 is sort of an underground cult favorite
- for over a decade, because it's trim, robust, and pretty easy to learn.
- It's Unix-like in many ways, but is not Unix. I own a bunch of OS-9
- computers myself, and earn a living from it as well (OS-9 is widely used
- in control systems - NASA, GM, Ford, Fluke, CD-I, MRI med scanners, etc).
