- .lha files are called archives, and 99% of the time are compressed
- at a 50% ratio for binaries, down to 30% for text, or 90% for pictures and
- sounds. Archiving allows us to make files smaller, taking up less disk space,
- and make a group of files combined into one file. For example, the Amiga UUCP
- program contains at least 100 files all in one .lha archive, compressed. This
- makes it easy to transport over modems, ftp sites, and directories.
-
- You need either a program called LHA or LZ version 1.92 for the
- Amiga. You can remove the files from UNIX machines also and then transfer
- to the Amiga, but that would increase the amount of time it takes to download
- it over the modem.
-
- Then, put the files you want in an incoming directory somewhere on
- your Amiga. Make sure it is stored on a disk somewhere and not just ram.
- Then, decide where you want the archive to be decompressed to. I would like
- to suggest using ram. Make sure you have at least twice as much free ram as
- the size of the archive.
-
- Then type the following format:
-
- lha x archive_name.lha to_path:
- lz x filename.lha ram:
-
- If the archive name is newemp.lha, and you want it to decompress to
- work:incoming, you would type:
-
- lha x newemp.lha work:incoming/
-
- All of the files would then be decompressed into the work:incoming
- directory. You can choose any directory, including ram:, provided you have
- enough room to fit the files. Otherwise some of the files may not be
- decompressed.
- The newemp.lha or whatever .lha file you have will not be destroyed.
- I suggest you make a backup of the .lha file just in case you make a mistake.
-
- I would suggest getting LHA instead of LZ, but make sure you get an
- LHA that is UNREGISTERED. Otherwise you will not be able to use it. Usually
- version 1.32 and lower are unregistered, or around that area. If you need to,
- try calling my BBS and get it from there. You and anyone else who calls will
- have free unlimited download access at speeds as high as 14,400.
-
- Let me know if you need more help. Followups to csa.introduction,
- since Dan kept reminding me over the summer. :)
