- There has been an on going discussion as to whether SHAREWARE is
- acceptable for posting in the group comp.sources.misc. This has
- been a topic that flares up everytime that a piece of SHAREWARE
- is posted to the group. I do not wish to moderate the group by
- dictating policy. I would rather that the community at large
- tell me what you feel is the correct direction in the matter.
-
- I am running a vote to once and for all decide whether of not
- SHAREWARE should be posted to comp.sources.misc. If you feel
- that SHAREWARE is (un)acceptable then let me know via a vote.
-
- VOTING PROCEDURE:
-
- Send votes to: votes@sparky.sterling.com OR uunet!sparky!votes
-
- Preferably, your message should include one of the following
- lines in the body of the text:
-
- I vote YES for SHAREWARE in comp.sources.misc
- I vote NO for SHAREWARE in comp.sources.misc
-
- The vote will continue until Midnight, December 5, 1992. At that
- time I will tally and abide by the results of the vote. A simple
- majority wins.
-
- And since someone accurately pointed out that I really should
- define the terms I use... :-) The following definitions were
- taken from the Jargon file.
-
- ######################## Jargon file terms ######################
- :careware: /keir'weir/ n. {Shareware} for which either the
- author suggests that some payment be made to a nominated charity
- or a levy directed to charity is included on top of the
- distribution charge. Syn. {charityware}; compare
- {crippleware}, sense 2.
-
- :crippleware: n. 1. Software that has some important functionality
- deliberately removed, so as to entice potential users to pay for a
- working version. 2. [Cambridge] {Guiltware} that exhorts you to
- donate to some charity (compare {careware}). 3. Hardware
- deliberately crippled, which can be upgraded to a more expensive
- model by a trivial change (e.g., cutting a jumper).
-
- :guiltware: /gilt'weir/ n. 1. A piece of {freeware} decorated
- with a message telling one how long and hard the author worked on
- it and intimating that one is a no-good freeloader if one does not
- immediately send the poor suffering martyr gobs of money.
- 2. {Shareware} that works.
-
- :payware: /pay'weir/ n. Commercial software. Oppose {shareware}
- or {freeware}.
-
- :postcardware: n. {Shareware} that borders on {freeware}, in that the
- author requests only that satisfied users send a postcard of their
- home town or something. (This practice, silly as it might seem,
- serves to remind users that they are otherwise getting something for
- nothing, and may also be psychologically related to real estate
- "sales" in which $1 changes hands just to keep the transaction from
- being a gift.)
-
- :shareware: /sheir'weir/ n. {Freeware} (sense 1) for which the
- author requests some payment, usually in the accompanying
- documentation files or in an announcement made by the software
- itself. Such payment may or may not buy additional support or
- functionality. See also {careware}, {charityware},
- {crippleware}, {guiltware}, {postcardware}, and
- {-ware}; compare {payware}.
