  15. There has been an on going discussion as to whether SHAREWARE is 
  16. acceptable for posting in the group comp.sources.misc.  This has 
  17. been a topic that flares up  everytime that a piece of SHAREWARE 
  18. is posted to the group.  I  do not wish to moderate the group by 
  19. dictating  policy.  I  would  rather that the community at large 
  20. tell  me  what you  feel is the correct direction in the matter.

  22. I am running a vote to  once and  for  all decide whether of not 
  23. SHAREWARE  should be  posted to  comp.sources.misc.  If you feel 
  24. that  SHAREWARE is (un)acceptable  then  let me know via a vote.

  41. define the  terms I use... :-)   The  following definitions were
  42. taken from the Jargon file.

  46.    author suggests that some payment be made to a nominated charity
  47.    or a levy directed to charity is included on top of the

  51. :crippleware: n. 1. Software that has some important functionality
  52.    deliberately removed, so as to entice potential users to pay for a
  53.    working version.  2. [Cambridge] {Guiltware} that exhorts you to
  54.    donate to some charity (compare {careware}).  3. Hardware
  55.    deliberately crippled, which can be upgraded to a more expensive
  56.    model by a trivial change (e.g., cutting a jumper).

  58. :guiltware: /gilt'weir/ n. 1. A piece of {freeware} decorated
  59.    with a message telling one how long and hard the author worked on
  60.    it and intimating that one is a no-good freeloader if one does not
  61.    immediately send the poor suffering martyr gobs of money.

  64. :payware: /pay'weir/ n. Commercial software.  Oppose {shareware}
  65.    or {freeware}.

  67. :postcardware: n.  {Shareware} that borders on {freeware}, in that the
  68.    author requests only that satisfied users send a postcard of their
  69.    home town or something.  (This practice, silly as it might seem,
  70.    serves to remind users that they are otherwise getting something for
  71.    nothing, and may also be psychologically related to real estate
  72.    "sales" in which $1 changes hands just to keep the transaction from
  73.    being a gift.)

  75. :shareware: /sheir'weir/ n. {Freeware} (sense 1) for which the
  76.    author requests some payment, usually in the accompanying
  77.    documentation files or in an announcement made by the software
  78.    itself.  Such payment may or may not buy additional support or

  80.    {crippleware}, {guiltware}, {postcardware}, and
  81.    {-ware}; compare {payware}.
