  14. A few weeks ago I asked whether anyone knew of a freely available MS-DOS
  15. NFS server package.  Many people suggested the SOSS package at
  16. hilbert.wharton.upenn.edu.

  20. However, I have since learned that I didn't really ask the question that
  21. I need to get answered :-(.  So once again I am appealing to the
  22. collective wisdom of the Net for the answers to a few more questions.

  24. First, some background.  I have 2 PC clones at home.  One is a
  25. 1988-vintage 286/16 (AT clone) with a 40M HD.  The other is a multimedia
  26. 486/33 with a Sound Blaster Pro card, a CD-ROM drive, a 105M HD, & Win
  27. 3.1.  I have purchased two SMC (formerly Western Digital) 8003EP
  28. Ethernet cards and thin-net cabling, terminators, etc.  I have installed
  29. the cards and gotten them to send diagnostic messages to one another.

  32. 1.  The first thing I wish to do is enable hard-drive sharing between
  33. systems.  What would be the best way to do this using freely available
  34. software?  My original concept was to use the older machine as a
  35. dedicated NFS server, but that is pointless unless an NFS client is
  36. available (which I have heard is NOT the case).  Ideally I would like to
  37. have both machines be able to access each other's hard drives, but I
  38. doubt that I could do that under MS-DOS (even 5.0).

  40. 2.  Which freely available networking packages should I use?  I have
  41. heard about PC/IP, CUTCP, NCSA, KA9Q, and a host of applications, but I
  42. do not know which one would be best.  Any responses would be
  43. appreciated.

  45. 3.  What other networking applications would be cool, froody, and hoopy
  46. to experiment/play with?  I anticipate I will mess around with most of
  47. the standard TCP/IP apps (FTP, Telnet, the r-series, etc), but I will
  48. always be interested in doing other cool things on my "house LAN."
