- We have had good luck with a Livingston Portmaster unit. They make
- a 30 port box which plugs into the ethernet; it can be configured either
- to tie ports back to a specific box (via telnet, rlogin, or their
- portmaster-special daemon), or you can make it a little more general
- and let people pick their host or even use SLIP or PPP to get out.

- It sounds like the feature list is a little bit longer than you really
- require, and that there might be a previous-generation stone dumb
- terminal server that would do the job.

- From: Edward Vielmetti <emv@msen.com>
-
- I've set up a new mailing list for users of the Livingston Portmaster
- line of terminal servers and routers. These boxes are in use by
- several network service providers (including ourselves) to support
- dialup SLIP and PPP access. Given that the demands of public
- access dialup are somewhat more stressful than ordinary async service,
- I thought it would be a good idea to get people working with the
- equipment off on their own list to exchange working ideas and to
- coordinate development requests.
-
- The Portmaster series includes a 4-port 56K router (the IR-4) and a 10
- port async terminal server (the PM-11) that supports SLIP and PPP.
-
- To join the list send mail to
- portmaster-users-request@msen.com
- To submit messages to the list send to
- portmaster-users@msen.com
-
- Disclaimer: though we at Msen have some investment in the actual
- equipment we have no financial stake in Livingston, and I see this as
- a user self-support forum as much as it is a way to get information
- from the equipment makers. Caveat vendor.
