- I have never even tried seamless windows; I'm using a no-name Tseng in
- 1024 x 768 x 256 and I run all my Windows applications (not many) in a
- single full-screen session. I leave this open all the time and just pop
- between it and my OS/2 Desktop. The big disadvantage of this setup is
- that my full-screen Windows session only works when it has focus; if I
- pop back to the OS/2 Desktop while AmiPro for Windows is printing, the
- printing stops until I go back to my Win-OS/2 session. The only reason
- I'm not trying seamless windows is that I plan to upgrade to an ATI
- Ultra video card shortly and it probably isn't worth the time to
- experiment too much with the Tseng setup.
-
- In any case, seamless windows might have been a factor in your case, but
- it isn't the only culprit.
-
- Apparently anything that causes lots of os2sys.ini activity will cause
- lots of growth; one IBM person explained the problem by saying that OS/2
- isn't performing "garbage collection" on obsolete data in the ini files.
- I don't know what activities cause new information to be written to
- os2sys.ini (thereby rendering old information obsolete), but these are
- the ones to watch out for.
-
- Since I reinstalled after my misadventure with os2sys.ini, I've been
- holding steady at about 66k. (Well, it was 29k after running copyini; it
- grew a bit and then settled down.) I haven't dared to try another screen
- blanker, although that, too, is at best a possible contributor, since
- some folks with growing ini files don't use screen blankers and some
- folks using the same screen blanker I was using don't have ini problems.
-
- Back in the days of MSDOS, I used to think it was an unacceptable
- nuisance to start removing individual lines from config.sys or
- autoexec.bat to try to isolate a problem. In OS/2 this type of isolation
- is simply impossible; there's simply too much going on at once.
-
- Cheers,
-
