- I don't follow Windows NT very close but some people around me do. The
- BETA of Windows NT was just released. Projections for the released
- product seem to currently vary from next spring or later (opinions, biases,
- etc vary).
-
- You were asking about the history of windoze and OS/2. MS brought out
- a much ballyhooed but very disapointing product called Windows 1.0 before
- OS/2 was announced. With the announcement that they were codeveloping
- OS/2 with IBM, MS indicated that they were also bringing out Windows 2.0
- which would be more compatible with the OS/2 API (a goal not really achieved).
- The idea was you could develop for Windows 2.0 now and then moved to
- OS/2 when it arrived.
-
- So far things were pretty cool. Then somewhere during the OS/2 1.x days,
- Microsoft announced Windows 3.0. They obviously put a lot of technical
- and marketing resources into this. I was quite aware that OS/2 was
- being short-changed at the time. You could almost feel a change in
- attitude at Microsoft (my opinion shared by others I know). That is
- the time frame in which the rumors of the death of OS/2 became strong.
-
- Anyway, Windows NT is NOT released. However, some of the press are treating
- this BETA release with the welcome one normally associates with a
- production release. Hohumm, what's new.
