  12. A similar post in .apps resulted in one request for a summary,
  13. and one very partial answer.  Maybe the thread I appended my
  14. questions to was already dying.   Anyway, perhaps someone here
  15. is willing to do better...

  18. When editing icons, I find that it is possible to save
  19. them in any of a number of different formats, and that
  20. many combinations of resolution and number of colors are
  21. possible.

  23. I tried to learn about these formats in all of the online help,
  24. under every name I could think of.  No dice.  Can't find anything
  25. in the FAQ or by lurking in these newsgroups.  If you can help,
  26. please answer:

  28. 1) If there is more than one format stored, which one will be
  29.    used in a given situation? (screen resolution/driver, etc.)
  30.  
  31. 2) I see that the icons appear to be about the same size regardless
  32.    of the size of bitmap which is stored.  How is the scaling
  33.    done?  (e.g., if I make a 64x64 icon, and display it on a
  34.    screen where it covers only 20x20 pixels, does it average 
  35.    color values?  throw pixels away?  what?)

  37. 3) There is the option of storing the icon in (pardon my faulty
  38.    memory of the terms) forms such as 1.2, 2.0 and 2.0 packed.
  39.    a) is 2.0 incompatible with 1.2 systems?
  40.    b) is 2.0 better than 1.2 for 2.0 systems?
  41.    c) what is "2.0 packed", and why doesn't that button work?

  43. 4) It seems that icons can be stored in files like "myicon.ico"
  44.    or in some other way (as part of the extended attributes?).
  45.    how does this work?  I'd just like to know what's going on.
