- Long long time ago, when gateway was a small friendly company selling good
- but cheap (no, wasn't really a contradiction back then), we bought a big
- load of machines from them -- about 20 386SX machines.
-
- Just after the 1 year warranty was over, guess what went wrong: (actually,
- to be honest, about 2 years after we bought them)
-
- - 8 monitors died.
- - 4 power supplies died. and before these great PSs bit the dust, they
- took a heavy toll on my various adapters in these machines (such as
- video adapters, ethernet cards, etc).
- - almost half the motherboards had to be replaced for spooky problems,
- such as the floppy drives suddenly not working, but they work fine
- on other machines, etc.
- - majority of the old 67MB RLL (we were real poor!) hard drives were
- completely trashed in a matter of 2 to 2-1/2 years.
-
-
- But, boy were we REALLY STUPID!!!!!. Right before these machines
- started dying, we bought MORE machines from Gateway -- FOUR MORE 486/33
- and 485/25s. I still remember the day we got the first 486/33 GW2000
- machine; started up the machine and the disk was DEAD (200 MB IDE).
- Called them up; phone tagged for two days and then finally got a good
- one back. The same machine is now sitting in a junk pile because of
- multiple motherboard failures and a disk (200MB IDE again) making so
- much noise that no one wants to touch it. Then the rest of the machines
- have the same type of story, some a bit better, but mostly as bad.
-
-
- 1989-1990: We buy 20+4 = 24 386SX GW machines.
- 1990-1991: We buy 4+4 = 8 486/{33,25} GW 2000 machines.
-
- still happy with gateway!
-
- 1992: out of 32, only 14 haven't had to go thru a complete overhaul.
-
- wouldn't touch another Gateway in my life!
-
- 1992: bought tons of new DELL and DEC PCs and junked (didn't even try to
- sell) most of the Gateways.
-
- Maybe we did get what we paid for, but that is no excuse for the treatment
- we've received from GW.
-
- peace
