  36. I'm having the same problems, but I've also noticed that when utmp is 
  37. messed up, neither reboot or shutdown function properly.

  39. Basically, I enter the "reboot" or "shutdown -r now" commands, I get
  40. asked "Why?", enter that, then nothing happens. I've only let it go for a 
  41. couple of minutes, but the system does not shutdown.

  43. If I rm and then touch /etc/utmp, everything works fine again.

  45. Any clues?
