- I am running Xwindow/Xview with only 4M (386/25 without 387)).
- It just works fine. I open 3 xterms, one oclock and one xeyes using olwm.
- If I used twm, I could have saved more memory.
- One xterm runs kermit to connect to the university computer.
- It takes about similar time to do the same thing on sun3/50-4M system.
- Maybe less than that.
- In that configuration, it uses about 2M swap space
- (I prepared 15M swap space).
-
- Running graphics packages like idraw or xv will require your patience.
- I use xfig instead of idraw, since it is much smaller and faster than
- idraw. TeX, Ghostscript, Ghostview, Xdvi, etc are running O.K. though
- not fast enough.
-
- Compiling takes much resource. Gcc is big.
- When I compile my research project which includes lex and yacc,
- it used about 8M of swap space, and the response was really slow.
- And it took almost 15min to compile lex generated source file.
- But normal compiling like making xdvi, ghostview is O.K.
-
- When I switch from one window to another it takes about 0.5-3sec (or more)
- depending on the load at that time. But I think that it is still much, much
- and much faster than OS/2 with 4M.
-
- You may expect around SUN3/50 with 4M performance from 386-25/4M (maybe
- slightly better).
-
- Cheers,
