- Hello, fellow Linux users!
-
- I am in the process of considering using X as my environment of
- choice, but before I take the plunge and buy my video card, monitor,
- and memory (!) necessary to make things usable, I'd like to get some
- feedback about how sweet X can be on a 386-40.
-
- Specifically,
-
- - how responsive is X with 4-8 megs ram on a 386-40 (or
- thereabouts)? That is, how does it feel in terms of speed in
- comparison to, say, X on a SparcStation II, a Macintosh, or Windows
- with a similar configuration? (no flames for the comparisons, please!)
-
- - what kind of video card do you have, and how high a resolution
- can you achieve with it? Does the acceleration (if any) bring
- things up to break-neck speed?
-
- - what advice would you give experienced unix users just beginning
- with X?
-
- I do realize that the answers to these questions depend greatly on the
- configuration of the machine, but I think some general feedback on
- this subject will be useful to many of us considering X. Your
- responses are GREATLY appreciated, so please respond if you think it
- will help other Linux users.
-
- I will summarize any e-mail I get and post to the net (in timely fashion,
- too, I hope!).
-
- Sincerely,
-
- Billy L. Williams, Jr.
- williams@lasalle.edu
-
- PS: ObPraise: Many thanks to all those (especially Linus) who helped to
- bring this wonderful system to my machine. It's incredible.
