  11. I have a problem with Ultrix 4.2 sendmail. sendmail (with UMC) acts as a
  12. gateway to the VMS A1MAIL system. My mail hub (which runs MMDF) passes
  13. messages to the Ultrix box far more quickly than the Ultrix box can forward
  14. them to VMS. This results in a large number of concurrent delivery
  15. processes running which leads to the machine running out of swap space or
  16. file table entries. This leads to bounced or lost mail and much wailing and
  17. gnashing of teeth.

  19. I have tried reducing Ox to 2, but this has no effect because the load
  20. average remains low (the processes are not runnable - they are just waiting
  21. for the VMS box to respond).

  23. Can anyone suggest a solution other than queueing all mail and running
  24. sendmail over the queue every few minutes. Neil.
