-
- Although CMC is part of Rockwell, my affiliation with the modem group is
- solely as a customer (we build an OEM version of the modem solely for
- use in our box-level router product).
-
- I have had some experience with both fax-modems in general (having had a
- rather frustrating experience installing a Unix email-to-fax gateway
- using an Everex 2496 faxmodem) and with Rockwell-based V.32bis/FAX
- modems, of which the above mentioned Zoom is one example.
-
- In general, there are a number of older FAX machines installed which
- have group 3 implementations that contain protocol bugs or timing
- problems. In many cases, these cause no problems when connecting to
- other "hardwired" fax machines. You may not notice if the remote machine
- times out when you send the last page of a fax. But if you are using an
- unattended fax gateway program, the program will note the lost
- acknowledgement and offer to retry the transmission. This can be quite
- troublesome. Several of the companies we do business with had machines
- that had such problems, and we managed to persuade them to upgrade.
-
- To effectively troubleshoot such problems, you need to collect very
- detailed information. You mention the brand of your modem and fax
- software, but neglect to give any specific revision information. You
- should also collect a list of specific remote machines that you have had
- good experiences with, as well as ones that you have had problems with,
- and what the problem was, and whether the problem persisted on a retry.
-
- Where the remote station is a computer with a faxmodem, you again need
- modem brand and firmware version as well as software brand and version.
-
- Without this information, all you are doing is venting your frustration.
- With this information, we can maybe together build a list of bug
- descriptions that will allow modem vendors and software developers to
- develop solutions to these problems.
-
- To display the firmware revision level of a Rockwell-based modem,
- record the responses to ATI0 and ATI3.
