- As I've heard the explanation, a primary motivation for 64 bits is to
- allow for _REALLY_ big virtual address spaces for processes that need
- to access oceans of data. Really gonzo database applications might
- want to memory-map humongous database files. A 64-bit address
- space ought to be able to satisfy that kind of requirement for the
- forseeable future (given the fogginess of MY crystal ball, the forseeable
- future can't be too far way, though 8-).
