- TMI-93
- The Fifth Internatinal Conference on
- Theoretical and Methodological Issues in
- Machine Translation
- with special emphasis on:
- MT in the Next Generation
-
- July 14-16, 1993
- Kyoto International Community House, Kyoto, Japan
-
- A number of commercial MT systems were announced in the mid 80's.
- This and the MT researches carried out during the time led us to learn
- many lessons. Although some of the theories and methodologies
- proposed in the past are useful in the future, we find a number of
- limitations in the current MT systems. In order to expand the text
- domain, the MT systems must be capable of handling texts with
- non-literal reading including metaphorical expressions. Difficulties
- also arise in the analysis of texts with ellipses and anaphoric
- expressions, which have prevented us from developing competent MT
- systems. Although contextual analysis is important, we are not in the
- position of coping with the full range of the obstacles. The time has
- come to sort out the problems and to seek new theories and
- methodologies for {\bf MT in the next generation}. The methodologies
- should particularly take into account the future computer
- technologies.
-
- This conference aims at discussing the problems in the current MT
- systems, looking for new solutions, and producing new paradigms for
- the next generation MT systems.
-
- Submissions are invited on substantial and original researches in
- theories and methodologies of Machine Translation, including, but not
- limited to the following topics:
-
- o Natural language analysis (in particular contextual analysis,
- non-literal text analysis etc.)
- o New architechture for the next generation MT systems
- (in particular parallel processing)
- o New MT approaches (analogy-based, case-based, etc.)
- o Multilingual MT systems
- o Integration of MT systems and speech understanding
- o Dictionaries for new generation MT systems
- o Construction of very large knowledge bases for MT systems
- o Text corpora for MT (in particular multilingual corpora)
- o Evaluation techniques
- o Friendly human/machine interfaces
-
- The Fifth International Conference on Theoretical and Methodological
- Issues on Machine Translation (TMI'93) will be held preceding the MT
- Summit IV, which is held in Kobe on July 19-21, 1993. The TMI is a
- submission-based conference, whereas the MT summit is an invited-based
- conference. The TMI'93 is particularly interested in the topical
- issues on MT in the next generation.
-
- We aim at bringing together users of MT systems, scientisits in the
- research of MT, and government policy makers to promote the
- development of practical MT systems and to investigate ways and means
- for their practical use in the society. Although the program of the
- MT Summit will be primarily invited bases, the participants of the
- TMI'93 are invited to attend and join the discussions at MT Summit IV.
