  11. Howdy all,

  13. I am a Master's student at Brown University. I expect to be graduating
  14. towards the end of 1993. I am very seriously considering getting a PhD
  15. in the area of machine learning, with a strong cognitive science
  16. emphasis. So, I am looking around for schools which have programs in
  17. this area. Among particular concerns of mine are the following:

  19.     1. Since, I will have an M.S., I want a program that will
  20.     not require me to take the usual year of courses that PhD
  21.     students need, since I will have already done so.
  22.  
  23.     2. I would like a program which places a strong emphasis on
  24.     doing things in a bilogically feasible way, in other words
  25.     one with a cognitive science flavor. If the program also dealt
  26.     with actual real world applications of learning methods, that
  27.     would be a big plus.

  29.     3. I am particularly interested in connectionist learning,
  30.     and especially with maintaining domain information in such
  31.     a context.
  32.  
  33.     4. Also, if I could somehow have my Master's thesis fulfill
  34.     a part of the research requirement for a PhD that would be 
  35.     nice.

  37.     5. Of course, I would like to find a school with a strong
  38.     research program and a strong faculty.

  40. If any of you have information about programs similar to what I
  41. described above, I would appreciate very much if you would let me
  42. know. Thanks in adavance for all responses. I would prefer email, 
  43. but any sort of a response would be much appreciated.
