  13. A recent posting asked about top schools in AI.  I would rate UMass
  14. as one of the best;  We have faculty in the following areas:

  18. Paul Cohen      - Planning, Expert Systems, AI Methodology
  19. Paul Utgoff     - Machine Learning
  20. Ed Riseman      - Computer Vision
  21. Al Hanson       - Computer Vision
  22. Wendy Lehnert   - Natural Language Processing, Case-Based Reasoning
  23. Victor Lesser   - Distributed AI, Planning
  24. Andrew Barto    - Connectionism
  25. Bruce Croft     - Intelligent Information Retrieval
  26. Robin Popplestone - Robotics
  27. Rod Grupen      - Robotics

  29. We also have several AI post-docs, and about 80 students working on
  30. their Ph.D's in AI (out of 160 Ph.D. students in all).  In addition,
  31. we have the largest number of grants of any public university (I believe
  32. we are close to the top among private universities as well).  All 
  33. incoming students are guaranteed an assistantship [I'm not sure if
  34. this is still official policy, but I don't know of any cases in which
  35. it is false].  The university also has one of the best linguistics
  36. departments in the country, and a good program in psychology and
  37. philosophy.  Finally, this area is a beautiful place to live.
