- No, that was Reagan's solution. The Dems were into "tax and spend";
- they at least understood that somebody had to be dunned for it.
- Ronnie amended that to "spend and spend". But both parties claim
- to have seen the light now. No, I'm not holding my breath.

- The Repubs hardly have a lock on that. And for every Baker and Nixon
- there's a Helms and Quayle. If you want to see expertise in Congress,
- you'll have to transcend those outdated party affiliations--and all
- the baggage that goes with them (e.g., the Dems wrap themselves in
- a multi-ethnic coat-of-many-colors; the Reps claim exclusive ownership
- of God and the flag). You want knowledgeable congresscritters? Try
- Vermont's "independent" Barry Sanders. He's a self-proclaimed
- socialist.

- Band-aids. And overrated ones at that. They'd change the personnel
- and maybe a few of the laws, but they won't change the system itself.
- Perhaps if we got rid of the lobbyists (as Clinton claims to want to
- do--although he's not likely to get very far, nor probably even try
- very hard) *and* restricted the system to economics and diplomacy
- and kept it the hell out of our bedrooms, maybe then it might work
- for the betterment of the commonweal--instead of itself.

-
- We survived the last 12, and the 4 before that. It's hard to
- imagine even more incompetence than Carter, more senility than
- Reagan, more meanspiritedness than Bush, more stupidity than
- Quayle. Somehow we manage.
