- Network Scientist/Systems Administrator Needed for
- Advanced Research Project on Broadband Educational Networking

- The CoVis research project will develop tools for high-school students and
- teachers to do collaborative science inquiry. These state-of-the-art
- software
- applications will provide synchronous, multi-user desktop audio-visual
- and shared data telephony. The tools will enable collaborative teams to be
-
- formed that include members from diverse schools. These teams will
- collaborate across school locations and draw on the expertise of remote
- scientific resource sites.

- Expected responsibilities include:
-
- o Overall network development for research project: network
- implementation, maintenance of software and hardware, and
- maintaining liaisons with collaborators;
- o Assisting remote school sites in developing on-site configurations and
- operating procedures for the equipment;
- o Working closely with telecommunications industry partners to assure
- productive collaborative relations for project goals;
- o Acquiring the necessary equipment and software;
- o Installing the project networking and server equipment, including
- ISDN hardware, analog switches, and wiring between workstations
- and wiring closets; also for installation and configuration of
- peripheral equipment;
- o Training the support people at the remote sites regarding modifications
- to their current environments and assisting them with integrating
- new equipment;
- o Installing and maintaining the UNIX operating system, X-Windows
- environments, and licensed program products on the servers;
- o Acquiring site-licenses for necessary products;
- o Monitoring remote networks and relevant communications hardware
- to detect and resolve hardware/software problems;
- o Performing all system administration tasks on the server machines;
- o Performing regular backups of the servers and client machines;
- o Assisting in purchase and/or service negotiations as necessary;
- o Assisting the software development team, as needed, in areas related to
- "real-world" implementation issues;
- o Working closely with the Manager, Computer Facilities, Institute for
- the Learning Sciences.

- Requirements: At least two years of experience in network/systems
- adminstration in an academic or research environment; Excellent technical
- skills; Well-organized; Good communication skills; Ability to maintain
- satisfactory working relationships with diverse groups.

- The Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University is an
- interdisciplinary, academic institute conducting state-of-the-art research
- involving computers in education. Its faculty includes members of the
- departments of computer science, education, and psychology. As a research
- community, the Institute consists of more than 100 professors, graduate
- students, and professionals.
