  12. Network Scientist/Systems Administrator Needed for 
  13. Advanced Research Project on Broadband Educational Networking
  14.  
  15. The CoVis research project will develop tools for high-school students and 
  16. teachers to do collaborative science inquiry.  These state-of-the-art
  17. software 
  18. applications will provide synchronous, multi-user desktop audio-visual 
  19. and shared data telephony.  The tools will enable collaborative teams to be
  20.  
  21. formed that include members from diverse schools.  These teams will 
  22. collaborate across school locations and draw on the expertise of remote 
  23. scientific resource sites.   
  24.  
  25. Expected responsibilities include:
  26.  
  27.  o Overall network development for research project: network 
  28.     implementation, maintenance of software and hardware, and 
  29.     maintaining liaisons with collaborators;
  30.  o Assisting remote school sites in developing on-site configurations and 
  31.     operating procedures for the equipment;
  32.  o Working closely with telecommunications industry partners to assure 
  33.     productive collaborative relations for project goals;
  34.  o Acquiring the necessary equipment and software;
  35.  o Installing the project networking and server equipment, including 
  36.     ISDN hardware, analog switches, and wiring between workstations 
  37.     and wiring closets; also for installation and configuration of 
  38.     peripheral equipment;
  39.  o Training the support people at the remote sites regarding modifications 
  40.     to their current environments and assisting them with integrating 
  41.     new equipment;
  42.  o Installing and maintaining the UNIX operating system, X-Windows 
  43.     environments, and licensed program products on the servers;
  44.  o Acquiring site-licenses for necessary products;
  45.  o  Monitoring remote networks and relevant communications hardware 
  46.     to detect and resolve hardware/software problems;
  47.  o Performing all system administration tasks on the server machines;
  48.  o Performing regular backups of the servers and client machines;
  49.  o Assisting in purchase and/or service negotiations as necessary;
  50.  o Assisting the software development team, as needed, in areas related to 
  51.     "real-world" implementation issues;
  52.  o Working closely with the Manager, Computer Facilities, Institute for 
  53.     the Learning Sciences.

  55. Requirements:  At least two years of experience in network/systems 
  56. adminstration in an academic or research environment; Excellent technical 
  57. skills; Well-organized;  Good communication skills; Ability to maintain 
  58. satisfactory working relationships with diverse groups.
