- I've got a question for people: Someone in one of my classes had his
- bike vandalized. It was knocked over, and "Riceburner" was
- spray-painted on it. (He rides a Yamaha.)
-
- Now I'm having similar problems. During Halloween I found my bike
- with a bent tailpipe, a bent brake handle, and a messed-up throttle.
- After repairing the superficial stuff, I found out that my electrical
- system was damaged. I worked on it for about 7 or 8 hours, replaced a
- $45 relay, got two days of driving in, and had my tire punctured. I'm
- not a rich fellow, so it was going to take me a while to fix my tire.
- THIS time, even before I got it fixed, while I've got a flat, I came
- home one night and found my bike turned over. (I was glad at the time
- that I hadn't bought any gas for it in a while!)
-
- My question is this: Why are people fascinated by motorcycles? Why
- do they feel the need to knock them over? Why do people need to bash
- on them with heavy, blunt objects and spraypaint on them? As has been
- pointed out repeatedly in previous discussions, motorcyclists must,
- Must, MUST be absolutely sure that their machine is in good working
- order, lest something go wrong at 55MPH and the front brake lock up
- suddenly. Why do people feel the need to ramp up the odds against
- motorcyclists?

- P.S. You know, it's funny, but in my first posting about the 2222
- deal, what I meant was that I don't ride on 2222 because of the many
- roads in Austin, it has lots of accidents. Of the roads in Austin
- that have lots of accidents, the ones on Mopac and 2222 are relatively
- fatal when compared to the others. On Mopac there is a place for a
- bike to run to if something comes hurtling out of control at it, while
- on 2222 there is almost no place to run. I've driven on Mopac. I've
- driven on I-35. When that truck jack-knifed behind me on I-35 and
- came hurtling out of control at me, there was space to run to. It
- came within half a foot of my knee, and took out four cars, blocking
- every lane but one. Even so I still ride on I-35 because even with
- the accidents, even with my own experience, I know that there is a
- place to run. I don't ride on 2222 because I don't feel safe there.
-
- It's been enlightening to find out all of the statistics regarding
- motorcycles (I'll still ride mine as soon as I repair the vandalism
- damage), and it's been interesting seeing everyone's viewpoint (even
- the ones who called me a weenie-wimp for not slamming down 2222 as
- fast as my engine will take me). But I'll still use my own acid-test
- when deciding what roads to ride on: Assuming something comes
- hurtling at me, totally out of control, will I survive?
