- ->I am an Episcopalian, am I a member of the religious right? Is everyone
- ->who has a religion a member of the relgious right?
- ->At times, it seems so.
- -
- -Several people have said this and I just don't understand it. What
- -have you seen to make you think that "Religious Right" is used to refer
- -to everyone who is religious? I only hear it being used to refer to
- -that group epitomized by Pat Robertson and Pat Buchanan who think that
- -their personal values should be imposed on everyone in the country.
-
- Southern Baptists sometimes are perceived that way. In fact, in a lot of
- cases, just plain Christians are perceived thusly. Anyone who calls for
- a return of morals and a values system in American society is labeled a
- member of the "Religious Right." More often than not the religion
- specifically targeted is Christianity or "Judeo-Christian" heritage.
- Sinead O'Connor wouldn't be caught doing concerts anymore if she had
- torn a picture of the late Ayatollah Khomeni on Saturday Night Live
- instead of the Pope. Many liberals are defending her actions
- nevertheless while those who are either very religious or conscious of
- other religions who criticize her are grouped into the "Religious
- Right."
-
- -To condemn an entire group for the sins of its extremists is bigotry.
- -Pat Robertson does not define Christianity any more than Florence
- -Kennedy defines feminism (or any more than Marx and Lenin define
- -American liberalism. :-) If anyone is equating all religious people
- -with the extremists of the Religious Right, they are sinking to the
- -level of Rush Limbaugh. If I hear them doing it, I will criticize them
- -just as loudly as I criticize Rush.
- -
- -One final question. If you object to all religious people being
- -lumped together with the Religious Right, will you object when Rush
- -uses the same tactic to stereotype and condemn some other group?
-
- I do when it's inappropriate to lump all people into convienient
- stereotypes. Reference to an article that was posted a few days ago
- about Rush's lack of understanding discrimination because he displays
- the thoughts of a typical white male.
-
- You cannot expect one person to define a movement unless he/she is the
- founder or the leader of that movement. Media pictures of feminists show
- Pat Ireland, Ellie Smeal, Gloria Steinem, and Pat Schroeder. It is wrong
- to think all women who consider themselves feminists think along the
- same lines as they do, but they are the ones who are referred to as the
- "experts." Likewise with the evangelists, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell,
- Robert Schueler, and Jimmy Swaggert don't typify all Christians, but
- they are perceived as the preeminent Christian leaders nevertheless. I
- fight making assumptions based on false appearances and images everyday.
- I don't recall Rush ever condemning a group of activists, just
- ridiculing them. He tries to be very careful, particularly in the
- differences between a "feminist" and a "feminazi" are to him, but
- nevertheless, everyone goes ahead and assumes that he is a misogynist
- because he dares to criticize the feminist leadership.
-
- I don't mind the labels that could be put on me from "Religious
- Fundamentalist" to "Limbot." I am not going to be offended with these
- names; heck, I sometimes am pretty amused. But labelling me as a
- Republinazi (as opposed to the "tamer" Democlone or Republiclone)
- frankly is offensive. That didn't happen specifically to me, but many
- posts during the last few weeks basically had a few people describe
- anyone who supported Bush as this.
