  25. Southern Baptists sometimes are perceived that way. In fact, in a lot of
  26. cases, just plain Christians are perceived thusly. Anyone who calls for
  27. a return of morals and a values system in American society is labeled a
  28. member of the "Religious Right." More often than not the religion
  29. specifically targeted is Christianity or "Judeo-Christian" heritage.
  30. Sinead O'Connor wouldn't be caught doing concerts anymore if she had
  31. torn a picture of the late Ayatollah Khomeni on Saturday Night Live
  32. instead of the Pope. Many liberals are defending her actions
  33. nevertheless while those who are either very religious or conscious of
  34. other religions who criticize her are grouped into the "Religious
  35. Right."

  37. -To condemn an entire group for the sins of its extremists is bigotry.
  38. -Pat Robertson does not define Christianity any more than Florence
  39. -Kennedy defines feminism (or any more than Marx and Lenin define
  40. -American liberalism. :-)   If anyone is equating all religious people
  41. -with the extremists of the Religious Right, they are sinking to the
  42. -level of Rush Limbaugh.  If I hear them doing it, I will criticize them
  43. -just as loudly as I criticize Rush.

  49. I do when it's inappropriate to lump all people into convienient
  50. stereotypes. Reference to an article that was posted a few days ago
  51. about Rush's lack of understanding discrimination because he displays
  52. the thoughts of a typical white male.

  54. You cannot expect one person to define a movement unless he/she is the
  55. founder or the leader of that movement. Media pictures of feminists show
  56. Pat Ireland, Ellie Smeal, Gloria Steinem, and Pat Schroeder. It is wrong
  57. to think all women who consider themselves feminists think along the
  58. same lines as they do, but they are the ones who are referred to as the
  59. "experts." Likewise with the evangelists, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell,
  60. Robert Schueler, and Jimmy Swaggert don't typify all Christians, but
  61. they are perceived as the preeminent Christian leaders nevertheless. I
  62. fight making assumptions based on false appearances and images everyday.
  63. I don't recall Rush ever condemning a group of activists, just
  64. ridiculing them. He tries to be very careful, particularly in the
  65. differences between a "feminist" and a "feminazi" are to him, but
  66. nevertheless, everyone goes ahead and assumes that he is a misogynist
  67. because he dares to criticize the feminist leadership.

  69. I don't mind the labels that could be put on me from "Religious
  70. Fundamentalist" to "Limbot." I am not going to be offended with these
  71. names; heck, I sometimes am pretty amused. But labelling me as a
  72. Republinazi (as opposed to the "tamer" Democlone or Republiclone)
  73. frankly is offensive. That didn't happen specifically to me, but many
  74. posts during the last few weeks basically had a few people describe
  75. anyone who supported Bush as this.
