  21.     Not a big deal, but James Baldwin wrote the screenplay 10 years
  22. ago as a book (available in book stores, and called "When The Chicken
  23. Comes Home to Roost").  It was based on HIS OWN ideas, accounts, and 
  24. knowledge of Malcolm. 
  25.     The script for _Malcolm X_ was written by Spike Lee BASED ON
  26. the Baldwin script and Alex Haley's book and many other sources, including
  27. family members.  
  28.     People find that very important because, ultimately, if the movie
  29. does not do justice to Malcolm's life, Spike is to blame,  NOT Baldwin
  30. or whoever.
  31.     I really hope the movie is what Spike says..."a masterpiece".

  33.     As a film student I had the opportunity to work at 40 Acres and
  34. a Mule (Spike's production co.) in Brooklyn as an intern this past 
  35. summer.  The movie really looks great.  I saw it get edited, and saw the
  36. soundtrack get put on, etc. etc., and I have to tell you this:

  38.     ...the film opens with a voice-over of one of Malcolm's most
  39. famous speaches as we see the Rodney King beating footage intercut 
  40. with an American Flag.  Back and forth, until the flag bursts into
  41. flames, which spread upward, to form an "X"...
