-
-
- Not a big deal, but James Baldwin wrote the screenplay 10 years
- ago as a book (available in book stores, and called "When The Chicken
- Comes Home to Roost"). It was based on HIS OWN ideas, accounts, and
- knowledge of Malcolm.
- The script for _Malcolm X_ was written by Spike Lee BASED ON
- the Baldwin script and Alex Haley's book and many other sources, including
- family members.
- People find that very important because, ultimately, if the movie
- does not do justice to Malcolm's life, Spike is to blame, NOT Baldwin
- or whoever.
- I really hope the movie is what Spike says..."a masterpiece".
-
- As a film student I had the opportunity to work at 40 Acres and
- a Mule (Spike's production co.) in Brooklyn as an intern this past
- summer. The movie really looks great. I saw it get edited, and saw the
- soundtrack get put on, etc. etc., and I have to tell you this:
-
- ...the film opens with a voice-over of one of Malcolm's most
- famous speaches as we see the Rodney King beating footage intercut
- with an American Flag. Back and forth, until the flag bursts into
- flames, which spread upward, to form an "X"...
