  10. Well, I had a chance to take a look at the "Luck of Lucien/Butter" UK
  11. Import 12" today.  My man picked it up in NYC a couple of weeks ago.  He
  12. likes it and I've been waiting awhile to check it out; I've been so busy
  13. lately.  So I walk in, he's playin' some house and then he mixes in some
  14. other song and when I realized what it was, I almost ripped the record
  15. off the tables.

  17. There's a remix and a dub of each.  The Lucien remix is *very* unlike
  18. the original and has lost its hip hop flavor and went the way of dance
  19. music.  Hearing the remix made me (unfortunately) think of Black Sheep's
  20. Strobelight Honey remixes.  Its also sped up quite a bit and its missing
  21. some key melodies from the original.  Tip's vocals are all there
  22. (surprisingly) although some other parts of the song are rearranged into
  23. different parts of the song ("voulez-vous...le poo poo").  The Lucien
  24. dub (I forget the names of the mixes) is very much an instrumental of
  25. the remix.

  27. The Butter remix (I think its called the Hip Hop Remix) is (you guessed
  28. it) more on the hip hop tip than the Lucien remix.  Its basically the
  29. original with more horns and keyboards and other assorted instruments. 
  30. Personally, I think the remix's added melodies & such detract from the
  31. song itself.  I found myself paying more attention to the new
  32. instruments in the song rather than the song itself (perhaps cuz I'm too
  33. used to the original).  Phife's vocals are all there but Tip's ("Its
  34. like Butter...like the butter baby")are gone.  The dub is different from
  35. the remix--its little exerpts of Phife over a disco-type beat.  Its even
  36. got some female diva-type vocals.  Foul.

  38. The vocals were taken from the originals, so basically it seems that
  39. they just snatched the vocals off the originals and put 'em over a new
  40. beat.  If you're looking for something like the Scenario US Remix (not
  41. the UK)...the one with Hood, you're looking in the wrong place.  Maybe
  42. that UK Scenario remix (the one on the B side of Hot Sex) will pop up on
  43. the remix album...

  45. Overall, I wasn't too impressed/happy with this 12", and it makes me
  46. wonder what they were thinking.  The sleeve says that they're from the
  47. forthcoming remix album "Revised Mixes for the Seasoned Traveller" (or
  48. something like that...I forgot the exact name).  But in any case, the 12
  49. is UK and it doesn't say whether the remix album will be UK only (like
  50. the De La) or not.  However, if this 12 is any indication of what will
  51. be on the remix album, I just might pass unless they include something
  52. like "If The Papes Come" or some phat remixes (cuz Lucien and Butter
  53. ain't it).
