- I have found a good solution to the caller ID issue...
-
- I have a single physical line, with 2 extra distinctive rings.
-
- I have purchased a box that routes the call to one of three
- lines, depending upon how the phone is ringing.
-
- My primary line goes to my PC/fax card, so any slimeball getting
- my number off of caller ID and trying to call me, will simply
- get a loud beep in his ear.
-
- I give out one of the 2 extra rings to my friends, and the
- third line is used for another purpose.
-
- This way, only people who I've actually given my phone number
- to will be able to call me.
-
- Note that a distinctive ring never shows up in caller ID,
- directory assistance, phone book, etc.
-
- The call route box (avail from Home Automation Lab at
- 1-800-HOMELAB) or the RD1000 from mailorder (this is the one
- I have) doesn't even pass ring voltage to the connected lines
- until after the end of the first ring and it has determined
- which number was called; therefore, you never even hear the phone
- ring unless they are calling the authorized number.
-
- I've also found the Friends Only device, available from
- Home Lab, very usefull too... it answers the phone after
- the first millisecond of ring voltage, and asks the caller
- to enter an access code... however, I have set things up
- without the Friends Only for now, because the Friends Only
- is bad for those calling me long distance and I'm not home...
