- It's an example of folk etymology. A few years ago a friend and I were
- talking about the origin of the term "love" for a score of zero in tennis.
- He hypothesized that it was a corruption of "l'oeuf," French for "the egg."
- Another term for zero scores in sports is "goose eggs", right? His idea
- seemed to make a good deal of sense, but I went to the library and found
- that "love" was related to "amateur" with the rationale that someone who
- consistently fails to score must be playing the game for love rather than
- professionally.
