  36.   I agree with Ashley's point.  I don't own a handgun, but my mom suggested I
  37. buy one for self-defense and the thought made me ill.  If this world
  38. is so violent that my only means of staying alive is to kill someone else,
  39. then I prefer to die.  
  40.   This is *not* to say that I think less of anyone who owns a gun for
  41. self-defense---it's just that I personally cannot stomach the implications.
  42. If I killed someone, I think I would be as traumatized as I would be if I
  43. were held at gunpoint and raped or robbed without the use of a gun to
  44. defend myself.  On the other hand, I am fortunate in having no experience
  45. with being attacked in this way...I recognize that I might change my mind if
  46. this were to occur to me or in my immediate neighborhood.
  47.    I also add the disclaimer that I am quite willing to kick, punch,
  48. scream, bite, etc to get away from someone....I'm not a sheep waiting for
  49. slaughter!
