- In my experience as a hypnotist, this has been the case. The trick is
- figuring out what the "deeper mind" (to use a neutral phrase) will do,
- and what it won't do. Occasionally, it will do things that the "waking
- mind" find embarassing or awkward, but I've never seen a harmful
- reaction come from one. More important, if an inappropriate suggestion
- is given, it tends to have one of two effects: it is ignored, or the
- person comes out of the suggestible state fairly rapidly.
-
- Please note, however, that this is all in the context of my experience
- with a volunteer in a personal exploratory or therapeutic setting, or
- in a stage show. I believe that guerrilla hypnosis is quite possible,
- and detrimental effects could be achieved if the highly effective
- techniques of hypnosis were combined with other forms of brainwashing.
- Not something I'd recommend, but it is something to be aware of.
-
- If you're interested in the subject, I would encourage you to enroll in
- a local self-hypnosis class. It's quite a useful skill, and by being
- more aware of your own trance states, you'll have more control over
- precisely when and where you wish to enter them. If you're like most
- people, you spend a lot of time in your head, and self-hypnosis is a
- very effective way of becoming more familiar with the terrain. Of
- course, I'm a little biased. :)
